Dr. Tom Rijsselaere, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ECAR, Belgium

Tom Rijsselaere graduated as a veterinarian in 2000 at Ghent University (Belgium) and immediately started to work at the Department of Reproduction, Obstetrics and Herd Health.

In 2004 he obtained his PhD, entitled 'New techniques for canine semen assessment and characterization of the sperm reservoir in the bitch'.

In 2005 he successfully passed the exam for the European College of Animal Reproduction (ECAR ; Subspecialty: Small Animal Reproduction).

In 2008 he obtained a Masters Degree in Laboratory Animal Science.

Currently, he is the Head of the Clinic for Small Animal Reproduction and Obstetrics at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Ghent University, Belgium). As co-supervisor of several graduate students and sabbatical researchers, he is involved in research on several aspects of small animal reproduction, such as sperm interaction with the female genital tract in dogs, artificial insemination, new techniques for sperm quality assessment and in vitro maturation and fertilization in dogs and cats. This research has led to more than 40 research papers and regular oral presentations on international conferences of the EVSSAR, ESDAR, IETS and ACT.
