Specialization
During the past years the focus for my clinical work and research has largely been on reproduction diseases both surgery and microbiological aspects, and primarily of female dogs. My PhD thesis dealt with various aspects relating to pyometra, and I have continued studying bacterial disease processes and the induced inflammatory response further from a clinically applicable perspective. Recently we have also started a research projects focused on exploring genetic differences in dogs that are susceptible to pyometra compared with those that are more resistant to the disease. Also the identification of biomarkers for diagnosing sepsis in pyometra is currently studied. I am accepted in the alternate residency training programme for ECAR and am currently main supervisor for two PhD students within the field of clinical diagnostics (acute phase proteins) and surgery (pyometra) and co-supervisor for two PhD-students (new surgical technique for ovariohysterectomy in female dogs and biomarkers for sepsis in dogs).
EVSSAR - some personal views
On a personal note, my interest in small animal reproduction was intensified after having participated in the first round of EVSSAR small animal reproduction courses in 2002-2004. Not only from an “in depth” reproduction knowledge perspective, by learning from experts in the field, but also through experiencing what a friendly and stimulating atmosphere, such as created by EVSSAR, can do for creating international collaborations and promote professional excellence. As a spin-off effect, many colleagues have formed important professional networks, but also life-long friendships. This fortunate combination is somewhat unique for EVSSAR, and well worth preserving.
